A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
